Issue Verified Carbon Units (VCUs)
Projects must open an account with a VCS-approved registry to be issued Verified Carbon Units, or VCUs.
Projects can open an account in the early stages of project development to be listed on the Project Pipeline. Learn about the Project Pipeline
Or projects can wait until after validation to open an account and be added to the main VCS Project Database for fully registered projects.
Projects must be validated and fully registered on the Project Database to be issued VCUs. Visit the Project Database
Open a Registry Account
VCS has a unique multiple-registry system built on a central Project Database. Projects must contact a registry operator to be issued VCUs:
- NYSE Blue: a leading environmental market infrastructure provider
- Markit: a leading international financial markets meta-registry
Request VCUs
Validated projects can request to be issued VCUs after submitting all project documents to the registry for a completeness check.
Once VCUs are issued, they may be held, traded, transferred or retired by the owner.

Requesting VCUs tagged with additional certifications
To request VCUs tagged with additional certifications, projects must submit all required documents to their registry operator before requesting VCU issuance. This is essential to ensure VCUs are properly tagged.
